||A number of years ago, we both did volunteer
work for Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge in upstate
New York (located on Routes 5 &
20 between Rte 89 and Rte 90; 12 miles W of
Auburn); an outstanding place to see waterfowl, shorebirds, and eagles;
spring and fall migration periods are particularly good times to visit.
There is a visitor center open 7 days/week
(closed during the winter
months) from 10 to 3 (10 to 4 on weekends); the
Friends of the Montezuma Wetlands Complex
operate a gift shop inside the visitor center.
The refuge itself is open during daylight hours.
here for the MNWR web site.
MNWR is a part of
the Montezuma Wetlands
Project which is an effort by the
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service,
New York State Department of Environmental Conservation,
Ducks Unlimited, Inc.
to protect, restore and enhance
wildlife habitat within the MWC.
